Summer of Dubz

Anyone that has read my posts knows how I feel about amateurs and whether they should get paid. They Don't! And I have heard it from many people why AMs should get paid. They are tired of the same old player packs, they don't want plastic they won't use etc etc etc. And I have heard argumemts about AMs feeling like they are subsidizing Pro's and visa versa.

So one of the things I like about disc golf is you can take it to any level you want. You can just play with friends, you can play for tags, you can play Sunday doubles, you can go to a tournament. You can play at ANY level you want to. And this got me to thinking. What about a High Stakes Doubles Tournament.

No shirts, no player packs, no divisions, no funny money, no trophies, JUST CASH!!!

Pick a partner, sign up and show us what you got. You win, you win big. You lose…well you don't win.

So that is what we are going to do. 30 team max, 80$ a team and yes you pay sign up fees, because the 80$ is going to prize money! Are we paying way down the list?  Nope. This is tentative payout. And I say tentative because we are looking for sponsors that may add to the pot.

Places 4-10 get their money back…80$
3rd gets 200$
2nd gets 400$
1st place gets 800$

Thats right, you want the big bucks, you better bring your A+ game!

Hey Bob, 30 X 80 = 2400 where is the extra money going.

Well I have built in that we can "not sell out" and still do the same payout. If we sell out, the numbers go up. If we get a sponsor, the numbers go up. If Otter Brook finishes the back 9 in time for tourney and we can add more teams…you got it…The payout goes up!!!

So mark August 1st on your calendar, find a partner and come play High Stakes Doubles!!!

Reg opens June 15th.

Otter Brook 2015

Otter Brook DGC is an ongoing project with a goal of being one of the "Go To" courses in NH if not New England. When its all said and done we will have 18 baskets with 2 tee positions on each hole. We will have DisCatcher baskets andFly18 tees on all holes. There will be excellent signage and a welcome kiosk. Not to mention making a course map, writing a caddy guide and more.

And to do all this we need YOU!

When we look at our to do list it can be absolutely overwhelming! But this season is actually going to be pretty basic as we focus on 3 things.

Fundraising. We are looking to raise 10,000$ over the next 2 years to pay for new baskets and tee boxes for the back 9. We have started the preliminary work on fundraising but we can always use people to help out. Whether you have fundraising experience, know organizations that can help us, or you prefer supporting the club monetarily...it all helps. Maybe its just sharing our Facebook posts with someone that you know wants to help! Bottom eine it is going to take a club effort to raise that kind of money!!

Back 9. We have already started cutting on the back 9 and hole 10 is complete and 11 has been started. All holes have been laid out and we are going to cut and complete one hole at a time. This will be going on as we are raising money. As soon as we get baskets we will start installing them. We will be posting work day dates, but if you want to go out on your own, we can let you know what needs to be done. Moving downed trees and branches off fairways and pole sawing are going to be 2 big things we will need help with. The goal is to have the back 9 in for the Otter Brook Open in Sept.

Front 9. This is your year to year maintenance. The biggest project is going to be re-leveling the tee boxes. For anyone that helped out last year, this will seem like a walk in the park in comparison. We are just going to pull the Fly18 add a couple buckets of Sur-Pak, tamp and put the Fly18 back. Again we will have posted workdays, but you don't have to wait for a workday to help. Lets us know a day that works for you and we will get you the tools you need to do it.

Clearing sticks off fairway and pole sawing are 2 other projects that can be done anytime. We have a couple of pole saws, so just let us know when you want to work and we will make sure to get you what you need. Other projects are re-measuring holes, and putting up new signs. Also looking for someone to write press releases to submit to Sentinel for our events. Always looking for help at tournaments too. Its actually a lot of fun to hang out and watch the players.

So what ever your skills or interests or schedule is, we have a job that needs you to get done.

What I got as an AM last year.

Amateur
noun
1.a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure
rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.Compare professional.
2.an athlete who has never competed for payment or for a monetary prize.

Last year was my first full year of disc golf and the first time I played competitively. I paid hundreds of dollars in league fees, tournament fees, Ace Pot fees, PayPal fees and the rest. So how did I do?? I tied for last at Base Camp Open, was not the most popular dubz partner in league, embarrassed myself at a Trilogy Challenge with an unprecedented display of bad putting and have a pile of stickers, minis and orphaned player pack plastic for my time, money and trouble.

And you know what? I loved every minute of it!  Well not every minute, the putting thing sucked, and I questioned my sanity at The Devens Ice Bowl, but all and all I loved it. I mean really loved it.

So I was thinking, what did I get FOR the fees, the long drives, the muddy fairways, and piles of plastic I don't use?

You Guys! Yep you. I got something last year better than plastic and better than 11$  for placing 5th in AM2, I got friends! Some are Facebook friends now, some I say hi to at a tourney (but I forgot their name) some we now have a beer or two after the round is over. Chris Mergz, Ladroga, Blaze and Lisa, Tony Two Putts, Marty, Trent, Titan, Brian, Jim, Drew, Bill and Norma, Matt, the guy that found my disc and called, the guys at Beaver Lanes…and it goes on and on. And thats just the people I met at events!!

And before I met You Guys at other course, I met These Guys at Otter Brook. These guys taught me the game, these guys have worked their asses off on weekends building tees with me, these guys shoot the shit about plastic for 20 minutes when I see them at the supermarket. These guys are now some of my best friends. Too many to even list.

So that is what I "got" for my AM2 and league fees last year. A bunch of  plastic, and the most eclectic, and diverse bunch of crazy mother fuckers that are my brothers in this great game we love.

And I think it was a hell of a deal!!!

Week 2 Otter Brook League

3/8/2015

If week 2 is any indication, it's going to be crazy on Sunday's at Otter Brook! 3 teams finished at -2 after finishing our usual 9 holes. FIVE playoff holes later we had our winner.

Shane and Kevin finished first with their -2 and the foursome of Rob/Bryan and Gally/Bob had a very competitive round with Rob & Bryan leading most of the way. A big bird on 3 and a par save of 4 let the Johnson boys sneak into the playoff.

The playoff round was incredible! Amazing drives, solid approaches and good putting. But in the end 2 shots off the cage on the 5th playoff hole by Bob & Gally left the door open, and Kevin dropped his putt in for their birdie and the win!

So congratulations to Shane and Kevin for A very memorable round and an epic win!

Week 1 Otter Brook League

3/2/2015

After ribboning up, trudging through lots of snow and dealing with less than perfect tees, week 1 of league is in the books. 7 brave souls came out to face the challenge that is Otter Brook in the winter. The calendar may say March, but it is still very much winter on the course.

We played 9 holes of random doubles with scores ranging from 27 to 33. Bryan Lake took the top spot playing cali (-1) and took home 5 points and the early spring season league (March April May) points lead. Kevin Lydon and Anthony Parente got 3 points a piece as runner ups. They snagged the #2 spot with a big putt on 4 to finish the round at +2.

Brian took home 21$ and the Ace Pot is up to 8$

2015 League

So pretty big changes for Otter Brook League this year, and I for one love them. We have struck a balance between casual rounds and competitiveness that is great for new players and experienced chuckers. Actually most of the difference is on the back end, so most players won't see hardly any difference. So what are we doing?

The first big thing is Otter Brook Membership. Do you HAVE to be a member? Absolutely not! But membership will have its perks. Besides league perks, if you sign up before March 15 we will have a bunch of schwag that goes with your Bag Tag (custom shirt, towel, and mini). After March 15th, you can still become a member, you will just get a bag tag. You will also need to be a member to be eligible for Ace Pots. We will also have member only CTP prizes and you need to be a member to qualify for seasonal prizes and for season ending Otter Brook Championship. But that is totally up to you!!! We encourage folks to come down any weekend to play.

The second big thing is we are going to keep track of how people place in Random Doubles and give out seasonal prizes. And we will be keeping track of bag tags over the course of the season.

3-4 times a month we will be playing Random Doubles just for fun. While points are part of it, it really is just for fun. Players of ANY skill level can come down and play. We have kids that come and play and that is awesome. The last weekend of the month will be a bit more competitive and we will be playing 18 holes of stroke play for bag tags. Again anyone is welcome to play, but you won't be ranked or qualify for Otter Brook Championship unless you are a member.

League is Sunday mornings. Till the park opens on Memorial Day we will be meeting at the "top" parking lot just off Rte 9. We choose teams at 9AM sharp. It costs 5$ to play. 3$ goes to winner pot, 1$ goes towards the ace pot, and 1$ goes to Keene Disc Golf general fund. This is one of the ways that we finance what we are doing at Otter Brook.

The spring seasons first league is Sunday March 1st. Yep, next week. Yep in the snow. And yep people will be there to play. Dress for 2+ feet of snow, and ribbon your disks unless you want to throw away discs. And yep, it sounds a bit crazy, but it really is a lot of fun and a hell of workout.

We will go over points and all that stuff in another post.

Any questions, shoot us an email at [email protected] or post a comment below.

I just added a calendar of events to the website. So far I have league listed, our tournaments, March Monthly meeting, and the First Live Free and Drive Event. We can add whatever events we want to, but my plan is to add stuff of local interest. You can find the calendar in the Otter Brook Disc Golf Course drop down menu. Here
